First you need to decide the type of frosting or icing you want to use on your cupcakes. In fact you're not limited to butter-cream icing, you might choose to top off your cupcakes with a meringue topping or a marsh-mellow fluffy frosting. Most cupcakes are just loved with a simple chocolate butter-cream icing, it can be the icing that makes the cake.

A simple frosting or icing recipe can be found in almost any cookbook or with a quick search online. There are really only three key ingredients, butter, sugar and milk or water. You can add food colour or flavor like vanilla essence to add interest. Making homemade icing has its advantages because simply adding a little food dye will make it any color you like. And let's face it home made always tastes best.

Though frosting cupcakes can be done simply with a big dollop of frosting and a spatula, consider using a pastry bag and piping tip for a more professional look. Pastry bags can be purchased or made by cutting the corner off a small plastic bag. How you use a piping bag is to fill the bag halfway, release the excess air and twist to prevent frosting from coming out the top. The size of the hole in the bag will determine the amount of icing that comes out. Create smaller holes for more detailed work. To pipe onto a cupcake hold the tip of the piping bag at 90 degrees to the cupcake and using firm pressure push and squeeze the icing out.

Consider using a few different colors when creating your icing. What are the colors of your child's favorite sports team? You could use one color for frosting and sprinkle jimmies that are the other color. Impress them with sports themed cupcakes and draw the emblem of the team on top, or simply frost the cupcakes in the colors and purchase small plastic toppers to insert in the cupcakes.

Not only can you spruce up cupcakes with different color frosting, one can easily add a few different items to jazz them up and impress the guests. For a simple, elegant look, use a white or pastel colored frosting and add a single strawberry, or raspberry in the center. Add a single piece of candy with frosting that matches the color or even flavor. Chocolate colored pretzels make excellent butterfly wings with a bit of liquorish for the body. A bit of imagination can stir up many cupcake creatures with rope liquorish for legs, M and Ms for eyes, red M & M's for spots or whatever one wishes.

With a little thought and some simple flare, frosting or icing cupcakes is an easy task. The guests will be thrilled and the little ones will love their special treat.

12 Cupcakes (any flavor) White Frosting Green Food Coloring 20 Large Marshmallows Cutting Board Sharp Knife 12 Nilla Wafer Cookies

It does not matter whether you buy your cupcakes at the store or you bake them at home. To get the best effect, make sure you use pink or white cupcake liners. These will help your birthday dessert stand out.

To make your Foofa's flowers, the first thing you will need to do is to make green frosting. Begin by putting 4-5 drops of food coloring into your white frosting and mix well. The color of the frosting should be a light green mint color. If it's not, continue adding food coloring until you get the color you want. If you make the mistake of going too dark, simply add more white frosting and mix well. This will lighten up the color.

Frost all 12 of your cupcakes with your green frosting. Make sure that you get a good thick layer on your cakes. The frosting is what will hold your flower in place. Also, try to make sure that you do not frost too far over the edge of your cupcake as this will create a mess when you try to eat them.

Now it is time to create the petals for our flower. Take a marshmallow and lay it on it's side on a cutting board. You will be cutting 3 petals from each marshmallow. Place your knife where you intend to cut and press down firmly. You do not want to saw the marshmallow, simply press down until you have cut completely through it. Continue on until you have all 20 marshmallows cut into 60 petals.

Let's assemble our flower! Each cupcake will have 5 petals. Place each petal on your cupcake leaving a ¼ to ½ inch diameter opening in the center. Grab a Nilla Wafer and put a bit of your green frosting on the back of it. Then, simply place your cookie in the center of the cupcake so that it overlaps the petals. There you have it! Simply Foofa flower cupcakes that anyone can do!
