Christmas Gift Ideas For Parents

Finding those perfect Christmas gift ideas can be challenging. You want the gift to say I am thinking of you, I know what you like (this is not a generic re-gift) and you want the gift to impress, if only just a little bit. Yet, when it comes to buying gifts for our parents, it can be challenging.

Most parents seem to have everything they want. Most parents also have enough money to buy what they want. Where does that leave us in the shopping department? Sometimes, it leaves us at a lost. But if we really think about those gifts before we go shopping, we can come up with some really interesting presents that parents are sure to love. Here are a few examples to get you started.

PARTY DECORATIONS

Hobbies: Does mom like to sew? Does dad like to fish or hunt? You may think they have all the tools for their favorite hobbies. But think, again. New equipment and new stuff are always coming onto the market. Buy dad that new lure and reel? Buy mom some new patterns or even a newer, fancier sewing machine with all the extras. Do not settle on buying more of the hobby products you know they all ready have.

Food and other treats: Parents are like everyone else, they love to eat and they have their favorite treats. Why not check out the many gift baskets available both in stores and online (that can be delivered right to your door or your parents' door)? You can buy these food gift baskets that contain many fine luxury items such as: dark chocolates, fine wines, gourmet cheeses and crackers. Plus, you add tempting breads, nuts, muffins, cookies and cakes to those baskets. Be sure the basket itself is nice. Mom may want to reuse it for decorating or storage purchases.

Useful services: Does dad hate to mow? Is mom tired of washing those windows? You could hire a service to come in and do those chores for mom and dad. They can be assigned to come as often as you can afford or as often as mom and dad prefers. Imagine the burden it will lift off all their shoulders to see the work being done, without them having to do it?

Mini-vacations or trips to the day spa: Would dad enjoy a mini vacation, near a golf course? Would mom like a mini vacation in a day spa? With a little bit of searching, you are sure to find both entertaining and relaxing treats for both of them. Imagine their pleasure of getting away and doing something that makes them happy. Do not worry about not having anything to wrap in a pretty box. You can always wrap the reservation tickets.

Remember when it comes to buying Christmas gifts for your parents, actually think about your parents and what they would like, not what they need or what is expected. If you do that, then the ideas should start flowing.

Diamonds are the symbol of the 60th wedding anniversary; why not incorporate this theme into the 60th birthday party. Men and women alike enjoy diamonds, and even if real diamonds cannot be purchased, faux diamonds will suit just fine. Its autumn and outside there is a veritable wonderland of interesting stuff. Have the guests get all bundled up and head outside while waiting for the food to cook with this Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt. You'll need to make up a list of the following items that the guests can find by themselves or they can break up into groups to scavenge. They are:

PARTY DECORATIONS

o a red leaf

o a brown leaf

o an orange leaf

o a yellow leaf

o a pine cone

o an acorn

o a walnut

o a dried weed or pod

o a seed

o a piece of bark

The first group to get all of the items or to get the most items wins. You can hand out special prizes for winning such as feather boas which are made from turkey feathers.

The Giving Thanks game is a fun activity that also helps to remind the family what the point of Thanksgiving really is all about. Have everyone sit in a circle and start off the game with a sentence that lists something really unusual that you are thankful for such as, 'I am thankful for Hotdogs because...' and then the person to your right has to finish the sentence with the reason why they are thankful. When they've completed the sentence they get to begin a new one with the wildest subject they can think of to be thankful for. This can be anything, aliens, feet, or even sneezes. Try and keep the circle going as long as you can.

Gypsy Fortune Teller Halloween Costumes - Easy to Make

As a little girl I often loved to dress up as a gypsy, whether it was for Halloween or just for play. Maybe it's because I long to be free to do as I want and go where I wish, without the societal constraints we have to live by (that's why pirates are so fascinating to people too). Whatever it is, creating a fortune teller costume was the highlight of Halloween.

Back then there weren't many places to buy fancy costumes (nor did we have the money), so putting my own costume together was a bit of a challenge. Today we can purchase practically any costume we can think of and there are some pretty nice fortune teller Halloween costumes to choose from.

PARTY DECORATIONS

** A Brief History of Gypsy Costumes **

The gypsy people were called Roma or Romani. They are made up of loose nomadic tribes that wandered much of the European countries during the Middle Ages and often lived in caravans. There are still nomadic gypsies in the world today.

In the 15th and 16th centuries, the basic dress of the woman was a simple robe gathered at the neck worn over an under gown made of chemise. They also wore a length of cloth which was draped down the back, around the opposite waist, up the front and tied at the shoulder (think Roman toga). A turban was worn on the head.

As time went on, fashions changed. For the most part, gypsies actually dressed very similar to the peasants of the area in which they traveled and cultural dress of the time. Most of the style of gypsy clothing that we picture today probably came from the Renaissance period when laced vests, flounced skirts, men's breeches and pirate shirts were more popular.

** Making a Gypsy Halloween Costume **

For those that want to put together their own gypsy costume or are planning on being a "fortune teller" for Halloween this year, you may have to do a bit of shopping around at used clothing stores for some items. If you are handy with a sewing machine, there are many fortune teller costume patterns available as well. Here are some suggestions for both men and women (and boys/girls) that can easily be created once you get all the items:

Women/Girl's Fortune Teller/Gypsy Outfit 1

* Long tired skirt in a bright color.

* Gypsy style shirt - gathered scooped neck, puffy sleeves gathered at the wrist or long wide flowing sleeves

* Brightly colored front-laced vest

* Black leotard stockings

* Black shoes

* Brightly colored sash for the waist

* Matching bandana for hair

* Gold hoop earrings and some long, colorful beaded necklaces, bangles for arms

Women/Girl's Fortune Teller/Gypsy Outfit

* Long wide-flowing black skirt

* White peasant's shirt

* Black front-laced vest

* Black stockings

* Black shoes

* Brightly colored apron or a shorter overskirt

* Long black wig with tight ringlets or curls

* Colored 2" to 3" wide headband

* Gold hoop earrings and some long, colorful beaded necklaces, bangles for arms

Men/Boys Gypsy/Pirate Costume

* Black or brown breeches

* Black boots

* White pirate shirt

* Long-length black or brown vest preferably trimmed with a gold-colored braiding

* Red or another colorful long scarf for the sash at the waist

* Colorful bandana

* One gold hoop earring

Let your imagination run wild with the colors and styles you could mix and match. The trick is to dress in layers and use clothing that is loose and flowing. Add jewelry like bangles, long flowing necklaces, large earrings and ankle bracelets to enhance your outfit. Use colorful sashes accent the waist (and also to hold daggers). Women could drape several sheer scarves from their waist to hang down in points around a solid colored skirt. Include headbands, bandanas and even eye patches for that gypsy pirate look. Purples, blues, greens, bright yellows, reds and blacks are the most popular colors and will make your outfit stand out.

Scary (But Fun) Halloween Party Games

If you have ever been to a Halloween party you know that there are traditional games in which every kid has taken part of. Bobbing for Apples has been a Halloween party games standby for a century or more. The traditional telling of ghost stories with a flashlight on your face still is a Halloween party favorite. This year try something new at your Halloween party. Break from the pack and start a new trend by playing Halloween games that are popular themed and will really give memories of fright and fun and not of boredom. You are sure to think of a few new games yourself, but after reading these ideas it might prime you to be more creative.

Fear Factor is a game show on TV that challenges contestants to do scary and disgusting feats to win a prize. This Halloween, instead of the traditional Halloween party games, have a home fear factor. If you have not seen the show, the basic idea is to perform disgusting, gross dares that will even turn the garbage man's stomach.

YO GABBA GABBA

The best way to start the game is to go for touch. Put some disgusting stuff in a box with a hole cut in it. Tell the kids that there is brains in the box and they have to put there hands in the box to move to the next Fear Factor Dare. In the box have a bowl of cold spaghetti smeared with tomato sauce for fake blood. When the children put there hands in the box they will feel the spaghetti but without knowing it is food, they will think it feels like brains.

Have other boxes around for the blind touch game. Put a couple of grapes in a box and tell the child that is the eyes of a dead pirate. In another box put is some beef liver and tell the child that it is the insides of the last child that played the game and lost. In the last bog you can take tied together shoe laces that are wet and cold and you can tell the child that they are feelings the intestines of a murdered woman. You can spin the tale to fit the age groups of the kids, but their heightened imaginations will make this one of the best Halloween party games they have ever played.

The next Fear Factor Halloween game is played with bugs or worms. Have a child sit in a chair blind folded. Tell him that you are taking out a snake out of the box. Tell him that it is a rattle snake. Shake a baby rattle next to his ear and slowly pull a rubber snake over his shoulders and across his body. There are many other gross and scary things that you can incorporate in the game.

A good idea for the end of this Halloween game is to serve gross snacks. Gummy worms and chocolate spiders are a great treat. Candy corn in chocolate pudding also makes a gross, yummy snack. With a little imagination and some creative juices flowing you can make the Halloween party games of the past a memory in only your mind and not your kids.

That's So Raven Party Games

A, That's So Raven party will be a great theme for any girl who watches the television show. You'll want to add some interest to the party with a couple of fun party games too.

The first game can be a simple True or False Trivia Game about That's So Raven. The website has lots of information you can use for questions. Think about questions geared towards stuff the party guests are likely to know, such as the name of the star who plays Raven, and what happened in so and so episode.

YO GABBA GABBA

To make the game more interesting you can have the group separate into two teams and make them face each other. At the end of the group place two chairs (make them sturdy) and label one the true chair and one the false chair. You will act as the game host and ask the true/false questions of each pair of players who are facing each other. Do this one pair at a time. When you finish asking the question about That's So Raven the pair must run towards the two chairs at the end of the group and sit in the one that correlates to the correct answer. Sometimes they both head for the same chair leading to a bit of a scramble. However that doesn't mean that's the right chair and the person who has to sit in the other chair may just end up getting the point for the right answer! After you tally points the two players head to the end of their group's lines and the next two players move forward.

The next game is just a fun word game called, "Traveler's Alphabet' to test the noodles of your guests at this That's So Raven party. Have the players sit in a circle. Each player will take turns asking the person to their left two questions, 'Where are you going?' and 'What will you do when you get there?' The first person to be asked these questions must reply to each with only words that begin with the letter A. If they succeed in doing this without tripping up or taking more than ten seconds they get to ask the next person to their left the same two questions, to which this person must reply with only words that begin with the letter 'B' and so on. For example, "Where are you going?', 'Barbados', "What will you do when you get there?" 'Baffle Barbadian Boys."

If you trip up you are out of the game and the circle gets smaller, this lasts until only one person is left the winner. Give them a prize that fits the That's So Raven theme.

Winter Birthday Party Tips and Ideas

Children born in the winter months miss out on the fun of pool themed birthday parties or even just being able to go outside during their birthday party. For you, winter birthday parties mean everyone is going to be spending most of the party inside, which can equal a lot more chaos and mess.

Planning a winter birthday party, though, can be just as fun as planning a summer birthday party. You just have to plan ahead.

PARTY DECORATIONS

If the weather outside is not too terribly cold and there is snow on the ground,, then going outside can be a fun birthday activity. Tell parents to make sure their child dresses warmly. You can build a snow fort, a snow man or go sledding.

If going outside is not possible, then you need to really plan out the party. You should have a general party area and make sure everyone knows that this is the party space and the rest of the house is off limits.

You will want to accommodate guests when they arrive by having a place for hats, coats, gloves and boots or wet shoes. If you wish to have guests remove their shoes then post a sign asking them to do so and provide a space for them to put their shoes. This way no one will leave wet foot prints across your carpet.

You will also want to lower the thermostat a bit right before the party. Once you get all the guests in the party area you will find the body heat will raise the temperature fast. To keep everyone comfortable, plan ahead and keep that area a little cooler then the rest of the house.

Winter birthday parties will likely need more activities then a summer birthday party. With a summer birthday party, being outside can allow for a lot of free play, but with a winter party and being inside for the majority or all of the party, it is more likely for guests to get bored.

Plan out some fun activities and hire some entertainment. You want to make sure you have something for guests to do every minute of the party. Have a schedule of events planned out so you can easily move from one activity to the next.

One major setback when it comes to a winter birthday party is bad weather. If the weather gets too bad you may have to consider canceling the party and rescheduling it. Depending on your area's weather you may want to plan an alternate party date just in case of bad weather. Let guests know on the invitations and then call guests the day before or day of the party of you will need to reschedule.

A winter birthday party does not have to be boring or dull just because the weather outside is. You should make the winter party as fun as possible. If you pay attention to the special considerations of a winter birthday party then you should be able to plan one that is amazing fun.
