The Fifties is considered an era of good wholesome family values. It was before the major war on culture, authority, dress, and institutions. It was a time when things were more simple, and yes, a little more conservative. Movies like Grease, or the TV series Happy Days glamorized the "cool" kids on the block, but according to one person who actually went through the Fifties, it wasn't all about that.
Those in that era developed their own slang, a lot of which could be made up just by adding "ville" to the end of a word, such as "coolsville". And as slang goes, it was a lot less offensive. Their styles still encouraged modesty, with a feminine or masculine flair. It seemed that gender roles were more defined, too. The cars were classic. The fads were fun. The music was catchy, romantic, and great to dance to. Given that, it is one of those excellent party ideas to relive an era that leans toward good clean fun. There are so many decorating options available when getting ready to throw a Fifties party. Ruminate on these.
PARTY DECORATIONS
* Diner or Malt Shop. Have your party set in a 50's diner. There are scene setter decorations that can wrap around a wall in that big black and white checkered pattern. There are classic cars to put on the walls too, or in a corner. Serve hamburgers and fries, hot dogs, and onion rings. Make sure you get a good recipe for a malts or ice-cream
sodas. If a jukebox is out of the question, get one of those cardboard stand-up kind at the party store. Make sure you have an area large enough to dance in, and play some authentic 50's tunes.
* Dance: Have a 50's dance. Look up some of the ways things were decorated, say at a prom, or high school dance. Have a DJ, and if possible a live band to play the oldies. If that isn't an option, get a jukebox or a phonograph machine. Invite everyone to dress up. Ask some talented friends to mimic a popular singer and perform some numbers that can be slow-danced to. One idea is to have a dance instructor, or someone who hails from the 50's to teach you several dances, like the swing or the twist. Have a dance contest. Throw a hula hoop contest.
What ever direction you want your party to take, remember to invite everyone to dress to the hilt. That includes the hairdo. Your own excitement will be contagious, and the party is sure to be a blast.
